The Disability Equality Duty and Disability Equality Schemes Workshop

18 December, 10.00-12.00, cost £40.00 with a 25 per cent discount for voluntary organisations, the Access Lab, London

The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 introduced the duty to promote disability equality for public authorities. This is a general duty that applies to all public authorities, plus additional specific duties to support the majority of public authorities in achieving the outcomes required by the general duty. The overarching goal of the duty is to promote equality of opportunity for disabled people. Part of the Disability Equality Duty is the requirement on public authorities to produce a Disability Equality Scheme that outlines its broad values and objectives, as well as a statement of its current position in relation to disability equality.

This workshop will explore the requirements placed on public authorities by the duty, including their new obligations in relation to public authority functions and also discuss Disability Equality Schemes, using Croydon Council as a case study. The workshop will be led by Catherine Casserly, Senior Legislation Adviser, Disability Rights Commission (DRC), Yvonne Howard, Interim Director of Group Equality and Inclusion, Transport for London and John Osbourne, Access Officer, and Sue Jones, Equalities Officer, Croydon Council.
