ITAAL's achievements
Since 1997, ITAAL made a number of important achievements including:
- devising a method of surveying accessible WCs
- developing a database
- collecting information on over 4000 accessible WCs
- publishing the English Directory of Accessible Loos
- publishing the Essential Companion to the Directory, which covered the issues and concerns brought to ITAAL
- providing a neutral forum for disabled people, their families and supporters to air concerns about away from home accessible loos through the Supporters Group and twice yearly newsletter Privy Counsel
- creating a Clearing House system to ensure that issues and concerns are passed on to the organisations that can best deal with them
- working closely with CAE – which has supported ITAAL since its inception – on design and the implications for service providers in Part 3 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995
- working closely with the British Toilet Association – ITAAL was a member of the BTA Council – attending annual conferences and exhibitions
- working closely with the Profound and Multiple Impairment Service (PAMIS) supporting their campaign for adult changing facilities
- participating in the consultation process for the Approved Document M: Access to and use of buildings 2004 edition and the British Standard BS 8300:2001 (Incorporating Amendment No. 1) Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people – Code of practice
- contributing to the aspects of the VivaCity 2020 24-hour-city research project regarding 'away-from-home' WCs – particularly those concerning disabled people
