The 2006 RIBA Inclusive Design Award
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Awards is a prestigious and high-profile annual event, organised and judged on the basis of the 14 RIBA regions in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. For the third year running, alongside other special awards such as the RIBA Stirling Prize, there is a RIBA Inclusive Design Award, in association with CAE and Nicholls & Clarke. The winner of the award is selected from all those who will win RIBA Awards.
The winner of the RIBA Inclusive Design Award in 2006 is Idea Store Whitechapel by Adjaye/Associates. Judges commented that the Idea Store's inclusiveness comes physically from the openness of the ground floor, which includes two entrances, and an external escalator which sweeps passers-by up to the facilities above. There are no entrance barriers or obstacles to getting into the heart of the building; instead security is monitored through a series of friendly guards on each floor.
