'Sir Robert McAlpine are major employers of all kinds of specialist consultants and have employed CAE specifically to advise on access issues for Colchester Garrison a £590m design and construct PFI contract including both new build and refurbished buildings one of which is a large multi-sports centre for use by the Army and the general public.
'CAE have provided an excellent service and have been invaluable in their practical interpretation of Part M of Building Regulations, BS 8300:2001 and the DDA not only to ourselves but also to the Local Authority Building Control Officer.'
The London Development Agency (LDA)
The LDA has commissioned CAE to produce the Access For All Framework for the Olympics, the Paralympic Games and the Post Olympic Legacy development in the Lower Lea Valley.
Historic Royal Palaces (HRP)
CAE carried out access audits of the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace State Apartments. The consultancy included liaison with the local access group, with a site visit. Part of the audits covered the Hampton Court Palace Gardens. Wayfinding, signage, seating and landscaping issues were covered.
University of London
The University is refurbishing and integrating Stewart House and the Senate House Library. Both buildings will form the new University of London Research Library. CAE has been engaged as access consultant to the project. Our role is to appraise and assess the potential usability of the refurbishment proposals, review the existing building services for further access requirements, provide assistance in the production of access statements and consult with University of London representatives and an external disability group.
London Underground (LU)
CAE has been a consultant to London Underground for over two years, assisting them with the assurance processes of access improvements works being carried out as part of the PPP contracts. This has included assessing supplier capability in delivering access improvements, developing an access statement process and delivery of 20 training sessions for LU and suppliers.
CAE has recently been engaged by LU to produce their Global Access Statement. The value of this work is to provide an LU-wide consistent approach and understanding of the policies on access within LU and their suppliers, enhance capability to deliver a holistic programme of access improvement works, enhance assurance that inclusive design is integrated into LU’s approach and demonstrate LU’s commitment to promote equality for disabled people in line with its obligations under the Disability Equality Duty.
Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH)
CAE developed a draft Inclusion Policy and Inclusive Design Strategy, an access statement process for GOSH building projects, and provided training on the DDA and access awareness and the use of access statements.
Arcadia Group
CAE designed an access audit template and a design strategy, developed through access audits across Arcadia brands, to assist Arcadia improve the accessibility of their shops and brands.
Wembley National Stadium Limited (WNSL)
CAE is working with WNSL to review and advise on the WNSL Access and Inclusion Strategy, including aspects of physical, management and customer services issues.
Disability Rights Commission (DRC)
In partnership with ECOTEC Research and Consulting, CAE co-authored two working papers and developed a web-based good practice database to enable the DRC and the London Development Agency (LDA) to engage with Regional Development Agencies (RDA), to develop good practice guidance, solutions and ways forward with regard to issues relating to the implementation of inclusive design principles in RDA developments.
United Kingdom Petroleum Industry Association (UKPIA)
CAE was contracted to write a petroleum industry specific guide which was distributed by the Petroleum Industry Association and its member oil companies to petrol industry retailers and service providers. The guide distils guidance available to address the petroleum industry's specific requirements.
Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust
CAE completed an access strategy for the trust to assist it with its duties under the DDA. This also included the production of the tender documentation for audits of its main properties.
Sir Robert McAlpine: Colchester Garrison
CAE has been engaged by Sir Robert McAlpine to be the access consultants on the design and build contract, worth around £590 million, as part of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project to redevelop Colchester Garrison.
National Museums and Galleries of Wales
The project included refurbishment and redisplay in an existing building with a new linked building to house galleries on two levels. Input from CAE began at design stage by working with the design team (architects and exhibition designers) as well as the client body. A design appraisal of the architectural scheme has provided a vehicle for access recommendations and documented client response to ensure advice is taken on throughout the process.
The exhibition design appraisal included consideration for access at concept as well as detail stages. Consultation with local access groups and the formation of an Access Advisory Group by CAE was key to achieving the museum objectives of ensuring that all visitors have an equal quality of visit experience.
